Frequently Asked Questions: Semaglutide Sublingual
Understanding the Medication
- What is Semaglutide Sublingual?
A compounded formulation of semaglutide designed for daily administration under the tongue. - Why is this medication compounded?
Compounded medications are custom-prepared by a compounding pharmacy when commercial options don’t meet a patient’s individual needs—such as delivery method, ingredients, dosage or availability. - How is it different from the injectable version?
This formulation is compounded as a suspension for sublingual (under-the-tongue) use rather than subcutaneous injection. Your provider can help determine if this delivery method is appropriate for you. - Who might consider a sublingual alternative?
Patients who prefer not to use injections or are exploring non-injectable options for GLP-1 maintenance therapy may ask their provider about sublingual formulations.
Prescribing & Usage
- What should be considered before taking this medication?
Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions and medications. This is especially important if you have a history of thyroid, pancreatic, or kidney disease (including any related cancers, even in family members), diabetic eye disease (such as retinopathy), or mental health conditions like depression or suicidal thoughts. You should also inform your provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or using insulin or other diabetes medications. - What should I discuss with my provider?
Ask whether a sublingual formulation is a potential option for your treatment plan and whether it fits your health history and goals. - Do I need a prescription?
Yes. Compounded medications can only be dispensed with a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. - How is this medication taken?
Semaglutide Sublingual is taken once daily by placing a measured dose under the tongue. The suspension should be shaken well before each use. Using an oral syringe, the prescribed dose is withdrawn and placed under the tongue, where it should be held for at least 90 seconds before swallowing. Patients are typically advised to wait at least 30 minutes after dosing before eating or drinking. - How should I store it?
Storage instructions will be provided with the prescription. Typically, compounded suspensions are stored at room temperature in an amber prescription bottle.
Access & Cost
- How much does it cost?
Semaglutide Sublingual is $165 for a one-month supply (30-day supply based on typical 2mg (1mL) daily maintenance dose). Insurance typically does not pay for this medication. - How can I get this compounded medication?
