Ophthalmic Compounding

Sterile Ophthalmic Compounding for Ophthalmology Practices & Surgery Centers

Massey Drugs compounds custom sterile ophthalmic eye drops and compounded sterile ophthalmology medications for surgery centers and ophthalmology practices managing inflammatory, infectious, post-operative, and complex ocular conditions. Compounded ophthalmic therapies are frequently prescribed when commercially available products do not meet clinical needs due to concentration limitations, excipient sensitivity, availability issues, or the need for noncommercial formulations.

All ophthalmic eye drops are prepared as sterile formulations under controlled conditions and compounded to support both clinic-based and surgical workflows.

Sterile Ophthalmic Compounding Capabilities

Massey Drugs is an NABP Accredited Compounding Pharmacy and provides sterile ophthalmic compounding for medications that must be prepared in a controlled, contaminant-free environment. Ophthalmic medications bypass the body’s natural protective barriers and require heightened precision, aseptic technique, and environmental controls.

Massey Drugs is a Category 3 sterile compounding pharmacy — the highest level defined under USP <797>. All sterile ophthalmic preparations follow USP <797> standards and are compounded using specialized cleanroom facilities and equipment.

Our ophthalmic compounding capabilities include:

  • Preservative-free formulations when clinically appropriate
  • Custom strengths and multi-drug combinations

  • Support for urgent, refractory, and noncommercial therapies

  • Clinic-use emergency ophthalmic solutions

Compounded ophthalmic eye drops may be prescribed to support management of the following conditions and clinical scenarios:

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access pricing for compounded ophthalmic eye drops?

Pricing for compounded ophthalmic eye drops is available through the Practitioner Portal. Licensed prescribers and clinics may register to view current pricing, available formulations, and ordering information.

Sterile ophthalmic eye drops are packaged to maintain product integrity during transit. Temperature-controlled packaging is used when required, and handling, medication use and storage instructions are provided with each shipment.

Most compounded ophthalmic eye drops are prepared and shipped via UPS Ground within 24–48 hours once the prescription is received. Emergency and infection-related ophthalmic eye drops are shipped via Next Day Air. Urgent or clinic-use needs should be noted at the time of ordering.

A BUD is the maximum time a compounded sterile preparation (CSP) can be stored before it must be discarded. This date is based on when the medication is compounded — not when it is dispensed — and ensures the product remains sterile, stable, and safe for use.  According to USP, “BUDs are intended to minimize the risk of microbial growth in the event of inadvertent contamination, and to allow for patient access to critical therapies.”
